Homework Update

Hello everyone, 

-Wednesday math homework went home today and is due on Wednesday, January 15. 
-In science, students have 5 questions to complete due on Thursday, January 8. 
-If your child is attending Colonel Irvine, a field trip form came home for a tour. SJAM's tour will be in February.

Happy Holidays

Dear 6D Parents,

On Monday, we started building for our Santa's Sleigh Challenge.  Using future human missions to Mars as inspiration, the students needed to build a sleigh that could safely and softly land on the Martian surface without dropping its precious cargo of presents.  Using a zip line, we strung up in the DLC, the students came up with some ingenious designs using only a cardboard box, some masking tape and a plastic bag, which many groups used as a parachute to slow the sleighs descent.  We will be revisiting aerodynamics and drag when we start our flight unit later in the year.

As part of our Sky Science unit, the students watched the Matt Damon film, The Martian.  We learned about many of the harsh conditions that people will face as we start to travel to the Red planet in the next five to ten years.  Sandstorms, radiation exposure and lack of oxygen, as well as psychological factors such as loneliness and separation, will be constant struggles for all astronauts making the 3+ month trip to Mars.

On behalf of all of the grade 6 teachers at Simons Valley School, we wish you a happy holiday and a restful break.  See you in 2020! Remember we don't come back until Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Weekly Update

Dear Grade 6 Parents,

Congratulations to all of the grade 6 students for their contributions and performances in the Show Must Go On!  It has been weeks of work putting the pieces together and the reviews of both the Wednesday and Thursday night performances have been phenomenal.  Also, congratulations to our grade six business team, whose Holiday Market raised over $700.00 from Inn From the Cold.

This week we have been learning how to classify triangles and polygons by looking at the lengths of their sides and their angles.  The students learned that by combining these two characteristics we can identify a triangle (i.e. an acute-angled isosceles triangle or a right-angled scalene triangle).  Next week we will be concluding this part of our geometry unit by learning to add up the angles inside triangles and quadrilaterals.  We will be having a check-in quiz next Wednesday on measuring perimeter and the concepts learned in our geometry unit.  Please look at the information under Quizzes/ Tests to see the review pages in the Jump book.

To kick off our Sky Science unit, the students started their Mars Colony project.  Each group of 6 needs to research the technology, transportation, accommodations, food/ water, etc needed to survive on Mars.  The students need to know about the characteristics of the red planet (temperature, gravity, climate, atmosphere) and then research technology that NASA and other space agencies have developed to allow humans to survive in space.

SVS Christmas Hampers

The Christmas season is upon us! It is a time many families look forward to the gathering of family and friends, the sharing of gifts and a warm meal. Unfortunately, not all families are able to participate in many of these activities which most of us take for granted.

In previous years, the SVS staff and community have had the pleasure of being able to help some of our SVS families during this time. We will again be supporting a few of our families by providing them with gift cards. The most asked for are to SuperStore and Walmart but any card will be accepted.

You can show your support by purchasing a gift card and dropping it off at the office by Friday, December 13th. We will then distribute the cards to the families in the last week of school. Thank you for your generosity and care.

The Martian Movie

To kick off our next science unit (Sky Science), we would like to show the movie the Martian (2015), during the last week of school before break. One of NASA's next major missions will be to Mars and this movie accurately demonstrates many of the challenges facing astronauts. All of the teachers have seen the movie and there is some swearing and other scenes that parents want to be aware of. Please read the link below as it outlines these.

Weekly Update

Dear Grade 6 Parents,

We kicked off the school week with an amazing presentation from NASA researcher Miguel Castillo.  Mr. Castillo spoke to the students about his work with NASA on the Orion Spacecraft, intended to carry astronauts beyond earth's orbit.   He also answered questions ranging from, "What do astronauts eat in space?" to "How long would it take to fly to Mars?" Mr. Castillo is also an author and specialist in holistic medicine and was featured in a 2016 TEDx talk https://youtu.be/xGZd8Mv7IR0 . Thank you to Mrs. Mott for organizing this amazing speaker!

We have been looking at how to measure and build triangles and quadrilaterals by following a series of instructions.  The class, in general, found this to be challenging work and we will continue to review the strategies and steps to correctly create these shapes.

Today we collaborated with a grade one class to create some pieces of art for the program, Homes for Heroes which is a community project of providing homes for homeless veterans. The art is being provided as a ‘welcome to your new home gift’. They were inspired by Georgia O'Keefe and were beautifully done.  The community also designed placemats at the Evening of Gathering and Giving. We will send the packages accompanied by letters which we will write with the grade ones, next week.

Quizzes/ Tests

-Measurement and Geometry quiz on Monday, December 16th (Pg 75 to 88 and Pg 93 to 112 to review)

-Marks for the Provincial Government quiz were released to the students in their school Gmail accounts.  Ask your child how they did out of 29 marks. Please note that if a student received part marks on a question, for example, 3 out 4, the computer will make it appear as if it is incorrect by placing a red mark. 

Homework

-Two additional math questions went home this week.  They are due back next Wednesday.

The Show Must Go On Performance

All students in grades four, five and six have signed up for one of the following groups. Ask your child if they have been assigned to Cast A (Wednesday, December 11th Performance) or Cast B (Thursday, December 12th performance). Students in non-performing groups are not required to attend the night of the performances.

Story Synopsis

In The Show Must Go On, student actors perform as teachers in the school.

After spending months perfecting the three-act musical Cats, the Simons Valley Drama club is forced to come up with a new plan. Cats is unexpectedly canceled, but the Junior Tony Award judge is scheduled to come in just a few days to watch the school’s performance. Since Mr. Snow was a young boy, he has always dreamed of winning the Junior Tony Award - The top prize a school can win for its theatrical performance. He informs the Drama Club that they must come up with a new plan.

The teachers realize they won’t have time to put together another full three-act musical, and everyone has a different idea of what to do. Mrs. Blyth and Mrs. Boulanger want the students to perform a dance routine. Mrs. Reeve and Mrs. Fuller think the students should sing choir style. Mrs. Sinden and Mrs. Moncrieff think that playing musical instruments is the way to go. Mrs. Neumiller wants the students to perform her original creation entitled, “The Neumiller Special”

Weekly Update

Dear Grade 6 Parents

Thank you to all of the families that made it out to our Night of Gathering and Giving, and an extra special thanks to the grade 6 students that volunteered to MC the presentation and run the various giving activities.  The evening was a huge success!

In this month's edition of the Hidden Valley/ Hanson Ranch Community Newsletter, the Hon. Josephine Pon wrote about her visit with the grade 6 students at Simons Valley School.  

"Also last month, I was honoured to visit the wonderful Grade 6 class at Simons Valley School. The students were eager to hear about a life in public service, and the daily routine of an MLA and Minister. Our Grade 6 classes are observing their government units as part of their social studies classes this year. It was my pleasure to spend time with our students, and tell them about my duties as their representative!"

We moved from our measurement unit, looking at perimeter and perimeter formulas, to our geometry unit.  We have been looking at identifying angles (acute, right, obtuse and reflex) and how to use a protractor to measure angles.

The students started a research project learning about the Canadian government's plan to ban single-use plastics by 2021.  The class was split into a group supporting this ban and the other group against the ban.  We will be debating this topic (let it be resolved that Canada should ban single-use plastics) next week.

Update with Due Dates

Dear 6D Parents,

Thank you to all of the parents that were able to make it to our Student-Led conferences yesterday and today.  It is always nice to have a chat and it is a valuable experience for students to show off their hard work.

We moved on to our measurement unit in math this week, looking at how to convert millimeters to centimeters to meters, etc.  We learned that the metric system was designed to allow easy conversions using the power of ten and by moving the decimal place to make greater or smaller numbers as you move from one unit to the next.  We have started perimeter and we will be moving on to angles and triangles.

The students are finishing up a few projects. Their provincial government flipbooks in Social Studies are due Monday for the red group and Tuesday for the blue group. Students need to have cards completed for the following topics:

     -Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA)

There is a Google Slide presentation and review document for students to work with. Our Provincial Government Unit Test will be on Monday, December 2. 

In Science, students will have their Trees and Forests project due on Friday, November 29th. The students have the notes in their Google Drive in a powerpoint called 2019-Trees and Forests. They will also be having a unit test on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Study notes have been shared with them in their drive.

An Evening of Gathering and Giving Thursday, November 28th (6:30pm to 8:00 pm)

On November 28th, our school will be hosting a night of gathering and giving for our communities. This evening event will consist of an official unveiling of a mural painted in our school by Ryan Jason Allen Willert. As well as performances by Jess McMann doing a Pow Wow Mash-up. A component of the evening will consist of parents and students working at various stations throughout the school. The stations will consist of helping the food bank pack birthday packages, designing hamper boxes, creating kindness rocks, designing placemats for Veterans and making cards for those in need who use Meals on Wheels.

If you would like to donate to this night, below is a list of donations we are looking for. Please only send NEW, UNUSED items:
